For the second straight week Jimmy Phelps beat both the weather and Super DIRTcar Series points leader Billy Decker to take top honors, with his latest tour triumph on Wednesday scored in the ‘Jreck Subs 100’ at Mohawk Int’l Speedway.
Exactly one week earlier Phelps forced the final lead change on lap 38 before late night showers at Orange County Fair Speedway shortened ‘The Big Show 2’ distance to 67 circuits. This time around the Baldwinsville, N.Y. pilot ducked under race-long leader Matt Sheppard on lap 90 and pulled away from Decker in traffic to post a half-dozen car-length victory in his first-ever visit to the Akwesasne site.
“About 30 laps in I didn’t really know what to do, didn’t know if we should pit and change tires or what,” divulged Phelps, 35, as the rain that started falling in sync with the final checkered flag continued to soak him in the winner’s circle. It certainly failed to dampen any spirits as his seventh career series win earned the first-string Team Troyer driver another $6,000 first-place prize. “But we were able to hold our own there. The rest of the track kind of slowed up and the bottom really came to us at the end.”
“We were just patient out there all night. About halfway through I saw cars ahead just keep getting bigger in the windshield and told myself to be patient and stay where I am. By the end of the deal the car was just perfect and we were just where we needed to be,” remarked Phelps, after climbing to within 42 markers of Decker on the series’ points chart, sandwiching runner-up Sheppard, who settled for third at Mohawk ahead of Danny Johnson, who earned a guaranteed starting berth in the Syracuse 200 during Super DIRT Week in October while Decker clinched a spot in the ‘Exemption Dash’ held on Friday of DIRTcar All-Star Weekend at Cayuga County Fair Speedway in July.
Tour followers Steve Paine, Billy Dunn, Brett Hearn, Dale Planck, Stewart Friesen and Decker teammate Pat Ward rounded out the Top-10 in a 36-minute race slowed by just three cautions, with half of the 30 starters completing the prescribed 100-lap distance.
Rocketing past pole-sitter Ward from his front row perch, Sheppard opened up a commanding lead after just a handful of laps leaving Johnson and Ward to battle on their own. Five more times around and ‘Super Matt’ already reached lapped traffic looking to put more distance between the JB Motorsports no. 9s Xtreme Lubricants/Bicknell machine and his closest challengers.
Mohawk regular Roy Tarbell slowed aboard his familiar no. 007 Chiefs Tobacco Outlet & Gas-Hair Secrets Salon/TEO to incur the first yellow flag on lap 20, erasing Sheppard’s strong advantage in front of Johnson, Ward, Paine and Planck. Back under green it took Sheppard just 10 more laps to roll out to a decisive ¾-straightaway lead, at the same time opening the door for Planck to move into the third position.
Track co-owner John Lazore looped his no. 19 Chiefs Tobacco Outlet & Gas-King Enterprises/Bicknell mount exiting turn one to provide the field another breather on lap 41, and this time Johnson maintained a closer pace when the green lights reappeared. On paper not much had changed when the midway point arrived, with Sheppard and Johnson still flanking the field, although Planck had rallied into third ahead of 12th-place starter Hearn.
Still scored in the same slot as where he started, seventh-place runner Phelps remained locked there on lap 50 before finally digging in to begin his ascent to the front. The "B'Ville Blizzard" cracked the top-five by lap 55, overtook both Hearn and Johnson to claim third by lap 60 and needed just two more times around to steal runner-up from Planck.
Weekly track favorite Carey Terrance slowed briefly on the backstretch to bring out the final yellow flag on lap 70, putting Phelps on the rear bumper of Sheppard with Planck, Johnson and Hearn enjoying the best view. Himself a fifth-place starter, Decker tallied his first top-five since the early going on lap 20, yet time was running out on the two-time overall Mr. DIRTcar Big-Block champion as the laps quickly dwindeled.
After nearly a dozen laps dogging Johnson, Decker charged into third on lap 86 as Sheppard and Phelps locked horns in traffic several car-lengths ahead. Once Phelps showed the way under Sheppard low in turn three to complete lap 90, Decker followed suit soonafter but his LJL Racing no. 91 Gypsum Wholesalers-Stadium Int'l-Quality Hardwoods/Bicknell ride could not gain further ground.
With just two laps to go, contact between Phelps and Vermont invader Todd Stone brought a sudden hush over the crowd, yet without missing a beat the leader straightened out the HBR Motorsports no. 98h Wave Energy Drink-Mohawk Northeast/Troyer entry just in time and rolled home to notch his second series win of the young season.
“We were just patient tonight,” figured Phelps, after matching Sheppard’s DIRTcar Northeast-high total of eight Big-Block feature wins in ’10. “About halfway through I saw cars ahead of me just getting bigger in the windshield. Said to myself be patient and stay where we are and by the end of the deal we were right where we needed to be.”
“We had a lot of good stuff going on at the end of last year. Our luck’s been a little better lately and we’ve been improving slowly. Catching some breaks for once is nice but the name of the game is still getting into that draw. We’ve been faster right out of the gate and starting up front in the heats is the key. The track was pretty wide and racy out there and seemed to be lit up just like a Christmas tree so obviously I liked it,” added Phelps, who dedicated the victory to the mother of team co-owner Al Heinke, who passed away during the week.
Mirroring the finishing order from last Wednesday at Orange County, Decker once again settled for runner-up honors behind Phelps although this night’s century grind went the distance despite rain clouds hovering all around waiting to break loose.
“The car was pretty good, we were slow there early and just a little too tight,” said Decker, 45, after racking up his sixth successive front-five finish in as many events on the demanding DIRTcar NE Big-Block circuit. “I just didn’t really know what to expect out there tonight.”
“On that last restart when we were sixth this thing just came to life. I thought I was going to drive up and drive past Matt and Jimmy but I just kind of leveled off there a bit in lapped traffic. So I guess we’ll have to settle for second.”
“We’ve got our work cut out for us when we return (September), it’s a tough race track and all these other guys run pretty good. It lends itself to racing pretty good but it’s tough to get a handle on. We’re gonna have to do some homework and see if we can maybe make a little bit of a gain when we come back,” added Decker, a two-time Mr. DIRTcar Champion in 1998 and 2008, as well as winner of DIRTcar Northeast’s crown jewel event ---Syracuse 200--- on four occasions.
Sheppard, the defending Super DIRT Week Big-Block Modified title race winner and ’09 Mr. DIRTcar runner-up behind Hearn, was forced to settle for a disappointing third-place finish after leading all but the final 11 laps in another dominant performance.
“We had a really good car, could’ve done without that last caution,” lamented Sheppard, 27, who has now led in four of the six series shows for a total of 229 laps. Phelps has also paced the field in four races for 91 laps with the pair garnering five Bilstein Shocks Fast Time Awards before Danny Johnson set the standard in time trials for the first time this season at Mohawk. “Ran a hard right-front (tire) tonight, seemed like once it cooled down on that last yellow it never got going again. Just didn’t want to steer.”
“I was really struggling, thought maybe I could hold them off but the 98 is going good. He snuck up inside of me and once he does that he’s gonna get by whether he’s fast or not. We’ve been good so far, just had a little bit of bad luck lately. The car’s been fast, and like I said before, if we didn’t get that last yellow I think we would’ve been in good shape. But that’s the way it works sometime,” added Sheppard, a 20-time Big-Block feature winner just a year ago including a tour-best count of seven in extra-distance affairs.
Big-Block Modified title chasers now take a brief break from tour competition before returning to Central New York for the “Stars & Stripes 100” holiday happening on July 4 at Rolling Wheels Raceway Park.
